A huge part of Social Studies is "Community" and how each person plays a role within that community. Bringing guest speakers into the classroom who play an important role in the community can be a very impactful teaching tool.
Town Mayor - Having the mayor come into the classroom would not only be beneficial in regards to how the community works, but it would also bring in learning about government.
Police Officer - Many elementary students are intrigued by police officers, and say they want to be one when they grow up. This would no doubt be a fun guest speaker who could show students different things about his/her uniform. More importantly talk about how rules and laws play a huge part in having a functioning community.
Banker - By having a banker come in students can be refreshed on concepts of money, as well as see how every person has a job that is crucial to the community around them.
