Math Lesson: Kindergarten Counting
Standard:
Counting & Cardinality - K.CC
Count to tell the number of objects
4. Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality
Prior Knowledge:
The kindergarten students have a complete understanding of counting from 1-10. They are still working on one to one correspondence of objects. For a pre-assessment students are given a small problem as following to test their correspondence knowledge.
Counting in order write the number under each object
(ideally student should count 1-4. with 1 number under each ball.)

- when counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name, and pairing each number name with one and only one object.

Objective:
Students will have a complete understanding of one to one correspondence with objects and numbers 1-10.
Motivation:
The motivation to get the students exited will be playing an interactive counting game!
(see procedures - bowling)
Procedures:
2. Counting Beads (15 mins)
Students will have a complete understanding of one to one correspondence with objects and numbers 1-10.
Motivation:
The motivation to get the students exited will be playing an interactive counting game!
(see procedures - bowling)
Procedures:
- Addition Bowling Game (15 mins)
- split students up into small groups: 3-5 Students
- Set up 10 plastic bowling pins (can use plastic bottles too) per group
- Taking turns in the group students will roll a ball at their pins
- The student will go the the pins, & outloud count how many he/she has knocked down
- this begins to help correspondence of one object per number name
2. Counting Beads (15 mins)
- Each student will receive a bag of 3 different colored beads: 7 yellow, 9 blue, 4 pink
- Students will individually sort their beads into 3 different containers, counting out loud as they put each one in
- One a sticky note they will write the total number of beads in each container
Assessment:
The assessment used for this lesson will be an art project with math incorporated. Students will create a counting octopus.
Assessment will be based on if the students placed the correct number of circles with the #. For example the strip has the number 5, student must have glued 5 circles on this strip.
Closing - Watch the math youtube song after students have completed their octopus assessment
The assessment used for this lesson will be an art project with math incorporated. Students will create a counting octopus.
- Each student will receive 8 strips of paper with a # 1-10 at the top of each. These strips do not have to be in any type of numerical order.
- Students will use cut-out circles, and place the designated # of circles on each strip. This requires the student to recognize the physical #, and then count out that many circles. Glue them on the strip. (do this for each)
- Students will then create the upper body of the octopus, and attach the legs.
Assessment will be based on if the students placed the correct number of circles with the #. For example the strip has the number 5, student must have glued 5 circles on this strip.
Closing - Watch the math youtube song after students have completed their octopus assessment
Classroom Management:
Thoughtfully choose the groups that will be together for the bowling activity. You do not want it to get out of hand and not meaningful. Also set champs expectations for this particular activity since it is the most active.
C - Conversation = level 2 quiet talking
H - Help = raise your hand
A - Activity = counting through bowling
M - Movement = only the person who is bowling should be moving, all other group members sitting down in a line waiting for their turn
P - Participation = taking turns with group
S - Success = Counting through a fun game!
