A.4.3 Construct a map of the world from memory, showing the location of major land masses, bodies of water, and mountain ranges
Prior Knowledge:
Students have an understanding of where places are located in regards to the United States, but do not have an entire global understanding of where continents, oceans, and main mountain ranges are located.
To see students knowledge of what they may know that was learned independently do a class map activity.

- Pull down the map of the world, and using a pointer point to different locations, asking students to raise their hand if they know what it is called. (ex: Asia, Indian Ocean, etc).
Objective:
Students will be able to recreate a map of the world from memory labeling the continents, oceans, and 2 other landmarks of their choice.

- Using the smartboard in the classroom login into google earth.
- Choose some different locations around the world to view (school address, great wall of china, the white house, eiffel tower)
- This is sure to amaze students of how huge the world is, the concept of google earth will be exciting and possibly encourage them to explore with it during their own time.
Procedures:
- Map Worksheet (25 mins)
- Students will receive a blank map of the world containing a word bank to aid correct spelling
- The following will be labeled: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antarctica, South Pacific, North Pacific, Indian Ocean, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Rocky Mountains, Andes Mountains
- Using the overhead/smart board the teacher will lead the activity
- pointing to each continent at a time, students will label their map and color in the areas as directed
- Using a self created twister board with continent names and oceans students will engage in this interactive and physical game to help with locations on a map! (newer versions may also be available to buy if you do not want to make your own)
- This is played the same as regular twister, only using continents/oceans instead of colors
Assessment:
Pumpkin Globes - Instead of using a formal paper test to have students re-create the map/globe from memory, use this art based assessment!
Closing - Create a sort of art gallery for all the students to get to walk around and look at eachothers awesome pumpkin globes!

- Each student receives a pumpkin, paint, and sharpies
- There will also be a sheet handed out with the guidelines: draw with marker or paint the globe, include the following labels: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antarctica, South Pacific, North Pacific, Indian Ocean, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, 2 other landmarks of your choice!
- Grades will be based on if they guidelines were covered or not.

The area that needs to highest management during this lesson would be the geography twister. If possible have more than one game. Make clear to the students that everyone can not go at one time, but assure them everyone will have the opportunity to play.
For the globe assessment make sure students have "paint shirts" on and the tables are covered.
